[ "that would be georgia." ]Kate takes in a deep lungful of salt-sharp air, savoring the smell of the ocean and the spectacular view.
Foam-flecked waves lap at her bare feet and ankles; she gives Bill's hand a squeeze, not sure who needs the reassurance most.

"It's fantastic, sweetheart."
And he went to so much trouble to arrange this extended weekend —
"I really ... you know, I thought she was joking."
(Until this morning, anyway.)

He'd even been able to convince himself by the time they headed out to dinner. Later, the unsettling feelings returned, but when he was able to get to sleep it'd been the best he'd had in a long while.
Now, though...
"Who knew y'could really get that kind of thing outside of Milliways?"
He gives a chuckle that's less than what he was trying for, but his smile picks up a bit.

Pushing aside the thought, she threads her fingers with his.
"At least we've got the carriage house all to ourselves."
Mrs. Palmer made the generous offer after breakfast, in hopes that Kate and Bill would continue to enjoy their time in Charleston.

He'd been pretty much over the fence on leaving, but with Mrs. Palmer's offer and Kate's assurance she was fine with staying, Bill had to give in.
This is their time, both of them deserve this trip and he can't let more crazy ruin it.
Resolved to keep having a good time here with her, Bill smiles.
"Guess we kinda lucked out in a way gettin' it."

Wet sand shifting under and between her toes, she rises to kiss his cheek.
"Thank you," she says, soft and sincere.
no subject
"You thankin' me for the upgrade? 'Cause I can keep actin' freaked out an' see if we can't get a free weekend or somethin'."
no subject
"I'm thanking you for staying, sheriff."
no subject
He looks at her and his smile widens.
"Been havin' a great time, with plenty more we still gotta do."
no subject
(She does have to thank him, because he's staying for her — because she asked, and because he couldn't say no; she knows he's more unsettled than he'll admit.
Truth be told, Kate's more than a little uneasy. Every time she thinks about the night before, she can feel those phantom fingertips at the back of her knee.)
She places one palm flat against his chest, unconsciously anchoring herself with his real, solid warmth.
"Oh, I know — I want to hit King Street. And find this coffee place I might like."
no subject
He's hoping it's a place she'll like. He went to a lot of trouble finding a coffee shop on the internet that she might enjoy (using the computer down at the station with help from Nancy the dispatcher), and memorizing its name and address so he could get them there.
Gesturing over his shoulder in the direction they came from, he offers his hand.
no subject
"Ready when you are."

Squeezing her hand, he takes them back up the beach; water lapping at their feet as they walk along the sand.

A few minutes later, as they wander the historic district, she soaks in the convenience; she loves being back in an area where walking distance is measured in blocks and minutes instead of country miles.

The day is clear and the weather hot as they move along with the other vacationers milling around.
Having gotten them here, he's now following her as they check things out.

Catching Bill's reflection in the glass, she can't help a small, private smile; he looks relaxed, even happy.
Before she refocuses on the delicate, gauzy tank that caught her attention, Kate also catches the second and third looks he earns from two college-aged brunettes as they walk by, and she bites the inside of her cheek to keep from chuckling. As much as she teases Bill about his ego — and as much as he pretends to have one — she doesn't think he's truly aware of just how good-looking he is.
no subject
"Y'know," he muses, head tilted slightly, "I could never decide which was more creepy; the mannequins with heads, or the ones without 'em."
Turning to Kate, he notices one of the girls looking back at him and flashes her a friendly smile before focusing on Kate.
"Y'wanna go in there?"
no subject
"Just looking for now. I might stop in later."
When she turns to move on, the brunette's eyes linger on Bill for a few seconds longer than necessary, but Kate's more bemused than anything.
She glances over.
"I didn't know you were a mannequin-phobe."
no subject
"I uh, just said they were creepy."
no subject
Her knuckles brush the back of his hand as they continue down the sidewalk.
"Relax, sheriff," she says, and with her playful tone, it's clear she isn't talking about mannequins.
no subject
"Was just bein' friendly."
He gives her hand a squeeze, then nods at another window as they pass.
"Shoes."
no subject
"You don't have to hold my hand," she murmurs, teasing. "You're breaking her heart."
no subject
"Yeah, but if I'm gettin' looks you're bound t'get twice as many. This is me stoppin' more heart breaks."
no subject
"Wait, what? Where's that ego you're so famous for?"
no subject
no subject
"You're just protecting your best interests, huh?"
